The Volunteer s Role
For this placement, we are looking for a volunteer to strengthen the communication system of CARE, WHZ Sector Offices and OBU, develop quality communication materials such as organizational webpages, briefs, publications and reports / documentations and support the development of partnership and networking among CARE West Hararghe Office, WHZ Sector Offices and OBU for effective implementation of GROW project in the targeted six districts of West Hararghe Administrative Zone.
As a volunteer, you will:

CIMMYT seeks an innovative, self-motivated, and results-oriented candidate for the position of Data Scientist (Post-Doctoral Fellow) to work on improving maize (and wheat) agri-food systems in sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of the developing world. The holder of this position should conduct and contribute to collaborative research at the nexus of agricultural research, applied micro-economic research, and geo-spatial modeling of human and biophysical systems, drawing on large amounts of data, and using a variety of machine learning and data-mining approaches. The specific research focus of this position is to better understand the opportunities for sustainable intensification in smallholder farming systems, through the use of geospatial analysis and modeling approaches. The position will contribute to a number of research activities focused on sub-Saharan Africa.
This post-doctoral fellow will work as a member of CIMMYT s Socio-Economics Program in close collaboration with other CIMMYT programs and with public, private, local and international partners.
The position will be based at CIMMYT s in eastern Africa (Ethiopia office, located in Addis Ababa or Kenya office, located in Nairobi).
Specific duties:
Contribute to the development of analytical models for ex ante evaluation of impacts of new production technologies at scale using a variety of machine learning and data-mining approaches.
Development of tools for quick monitoring of data collected via CAPI software.
Integration of data from multiple sources, e.g. household surveys, farm trials, market information, remote sensing and geospatial data.
Provide support to the development of project proposals and reports.
Produce peer-reviewed research articles.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:
A recent Ph.D. in statistics or a quantitatively-oriented social or natural science.
Experience with modern statistical learning approaches, including machine learning algorithms and data mining techniques.
Experience with spatial modeling.
Competency in R and/or Python.
Strong understanding of database architecture, statistics, data visualization, etc.
Expertise in working with large data sets.
An ability to teach others.

Requirements
Qualification and Work Experience Required
Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication, or other related field. An advanced degree preferably in knowledge management and/or development Communication will be an advantage. Knowledge of relevant computer applications including Communication IT tools is mandatory.
Work Experience
Experience in Development communication activities, media relation, advocacy management, organization of focus groups, public communication and social mobilization
- Familiarity with developing and delivering development Communication and knowledge management programmes.

Expertise France s mission is to meet the demand of partner countries seeking to enhance the quality of their public policies in order to address the environmental, social, economic and security challenges they are facing.
Since January 2016 Expertise France is implementing the project Addressing Mixed Migration Flows in Eastern Africa (AMMi) intending to support East African countries to address the challenges posed by mixed migration flows. The current action is funded by the Development and Cooperation Instrument of the European Union and its duration is 36 months
This project, implemented by Expertise France in cooperation with other EU Member States, international organizations and NGOs, aims notably at :
assisting national authorities in setting up or strengthening safe and rights-respectful reception offices for migrants/asylum seekers/refugees ;
supporting and facilitating the fight against criminal networks involved in human trafficking and smuggling through capacity building and assistance to partner countries in developing evidence-based policies and conducting criminal investigations ;
supporting local authorities and civil society in Djibouti in the setting up of national legislation and protection mechanism for unaccompanied minors
Overall mission:
The Capitalization-AME Officer will be based in the Addis Abeba office and will be required to travel to our main areas of intervention in the Horn of Africa. The C-AME Officer will work closely with the project team in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Paris, and will coordinate with the project s partners as well as with other EU-funded projects under the Khartoum Process in the area.
Under the supervision of the Project Director in Addis, the C-AME Officer will :
- Lead the capitalization exercise of the AMMi project ;

Role overview
The main purpose of this placement is to design and deliver programs which could enable the capacity of partner and primary actors respond to emergency situations. The project aimed at improving the resilience capacity of pastoralist community in the project location through different innovative interventions.

As a VSO volunteer, you will be sharing your skills with local communities on a full time basis. For more than 30 years, M decins du Monde, a campaigning medical organisation committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies.
Those working for this independent organisation do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations.
MdM currently works in more than 45 countries across all continents where it focuses on 5 priority areas: emergency and crisis, sexual and reproductive health, harm reduction, migrants and displaced populations (health rights), health and environment.
MDM has been working in Ethiopia for more than 20 years in different types of projects from long-term interventions to emergency response. MDM has concentrated its efforts on projects related to basic access to primary health care (projects centred on rural health facilities and isolated populations) and to reduction of maternal mortality through improved quality of obstetric care. Over the last 10 years, MDM has also been involved in the building of health facilities, in surgery related to obstetric care, in PMTCT (Prevention of mother-to-child transmission) and in primary health care in Somali region. Due to huge operational constraints, MdM suspended activities in Somali region in June 2011 and has restarted in January 2014 in Afar region for a 4-year project, under the title of preventing genital mutilation and its harmful consequences with the objective to reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
In 2017, 2 exploratory missions have been implemented: one has been done in the same area of last year s project in zone 5 of Afar region, in the continuity of the project to extend the activities in Sexual Reproductive Health area.
The second one has been done on sex work area among the corridor AA- Djibouti, focusing in the Afar part zone 1.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the general coordinator you supervise and coordinate all the activities of the mission, in accordance with the safety of property and people, and to guarantee that the mission is relevant and complies with the contract of objectives.

2820 gross monthly salary on 13 months
Expatriation bonus (10% gross salary per month)

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
Master's degree level
Training in management
Public Health background or medical background is a plus
Experience in team management and project management
Experience of 5 years in an international NGO and in a similar position
Experience on SRH / SGBV / Sex Work / Harm reduction an asset (through not mandatory)
Significant experience in the field security management
English, well spoken and written mandatory
Strong communication skills, with strong sense of diplomacy
Drafting and reporting skills, ability to write concise and well presented reports in a timely manner
Technical skills in assessment, monitoring and evaluation
Ability to lead and work as part of a team of expatriate and national staff
Computer skills - Microsoft Office, internet and data management

The Volunteer s Role
The overall purpose of this placement is to strengthen the gender and nutrition sensitiveness of development interventions in the zone
As a volunteer, you will:
-Design and implement sectoral gender and nutrition capacity building activities
-Assist in planning of the sectoral nutrition interventions
-Design and implement gender equality, and optimal maternal and child care practice promotion campaigns
-Assist in the design and implementation of women and adolescent empowerment activities
-Assist in assessment of women, adolescents, and children nutritional status
Essential Academic Qualifications:
BSc. /MSc. degree in Gender and Deployment Studies, Demography, Sociology/Social Anthropology or related field
Essential Professional Background:
At least three years work experience in managing /advising gender and development interventions
Hands on experience in design of women empowerment interventions

Pre-departure training and in-country orientation

The Volunteer s Role
The objective of this placement is to improve the quality of antenatal and postnatal care through the development of skilled professionals, increase the mentorship of healthcare units and professionals and decrease maternal and neonatal deaths
As a volunteer, you will:
Conduct need assessments and build the capacity of teachers and students
In collaboration with Pawe hospital management, design and deliver in-service training for the midwives and other relevant colleagues
Plan and deliver coaching and mentoring to improve routine works as per the required standard practices
Develop tools to improve identified gaps in the provision of quality care and services; support the promotion of professional ethics and devoted working culture in the provision of quality care and services
Participate in the planning and implementation of need-based changes that brings improvement at the college system level
